Mary Jo Mongan enjoys representing clients at Baxter and Harder on a wide variety of matters, with her primary focus on family law. Prior to joining Baxter and Harder LLC, Ms. Mongan was a solo practitioner of Mongan Law LLC, and represented clients primarily in family law, and estate planning/litigation matters. Ms. Mongan assisted clients with divorce, child custody, parenting plans, mediations, modifications of judgments, restraining orders, contempt of court charges, enforcement of parenting time matters, and trial. Ms. Mongan recognizes the unique nature of family law matters, and that finding the appropriate resolution is different for each family and case. Ms. Mongan advocates strongly for her clients, and works to assist them in finding the appropriate resolution for their matter.
Prior to Mongan Law, Mary Jo Mongan was a prosecutor for Deschutes County District Attorney’s office. As a prosecutor, Ms. Mongan charged criminal matters, negotiated plea deals, litigated motions, and frequently went to trial representing the State of Oregon. Ms. Mongan worked closely with law enforcement agencies, and victim’s rights advocates.
Before working as a prosecutor, Ms. Mongan was an executive director for a Woman’s Crisis Center a nonprofit to assist victims of domestic violence. Ms. Mongan was responsible for developing the budget for the organization, public appearances/ fundraisers, hiring staff, and management. The organization assisted victims through the court process, and assisted them in finding jobs and housing, as well as therapy for victims and children.
Ms. Mongan’s volunteer opportunities include serving as secretary for the Deschutes County Bar Association 2016-17. During her time as secretary, Ms. Mongan assisted in the development of a family law committee for the Deschutes Bar Association which provided continuing legal education to lawyers practicing family law in Deschutes County. Ms. Mongan has also volunteered for both the Center for Non-profit Legal Services in Medford Oregon, and Legal Aid Services of Bend, Oregon, in which Ms. Mongan participated in the Bankruptcy Clinic, and was on the Oregon State Bar 2010 Bro Bono honor role.
Mary Jo Mongan received her undergraduate degree from Lewis and Clark College in 2001, and her Juris Doctorate Degree from Vermont Law School in 2006. During law school, Ms. Mongan clerked for the California Attorney General’s Office, was on the Environmental Law Review, and was first Place in the Vermont Law School American Bar Association (ABA) Negotiation competition, and represented Vermont Law School in New York City in the final ABA Negotiation completion.
Ms. Mongan enjoys living in the beautiful high desert of Central Oregon, and in her spare time takes advantage of the wonderful outdoor opportunities that central Oregon has to offer.
